Careful packing protects the things you own. Your valuation choice determines how a loss or damage claim is handled.
This guide covers household moves with WDA Movers where pickup and delivery are both in Oregon, including homes and condos in Eugene and Springfield. Valuation is the level of liability you select for your belongings. It is different from buying an insurance policy.
Two options. Different levels of protection.
Select your option in writing on the bill of lading—the moving contract—before service begins.
| Released Value Protection | Replacement Cost Protection |
|---|---|
| How a covered claim is assessedUp to $0.60 per pound of the individual lost or damaged article. | How a covered claim is assessedSatisfactory repair, equivalent replacement or reimbursement for replacement cost, at the carrier's option and subject to your declared value and applicable terms. |
| Additional valuation chargeNo additional charge. | Additional valuation charge$0.85 for each $100, or fraction of $100, of declared shipment value. |
| What the amount representsThe item's weight determines the limit. Its purchase price does not increase that limit. | What the amount representsYour declared value applies to the entire shipment. It is not a separate allowance for every item. |
Oregon explains these options in its valuation rule and consumer moving bulletin. Special limits can still apply to certain goods.
The same table. A very different claim.
Imagine a 40-pound solid-wood side table with a comparable replacement value of $1,000. It is damaged during the move.
With released value
Up to $24
40 pounds × $0.60 = $24. The table's $1,000 value does not change this weight-based limit.
With replacement cost
Repair, equivalent replacement or reimbursement
The claim considers the table's replacement value under your selected terms. It does not automatically mean a $1,000 check or a brand-new table.
Illustration only, assuming a covered claim and an adequate declared shipment value. Actual settlement depends on the circumstances and applicable terms.
What replacement-cost protection costs at WDA
The charge is $0.85 per $100 of declared value, rounding any partial $100 up to a full unit. Moving services are charged separately.
- Minimum declared value
- The greater of $10,000 or $6 multiplied by the shipment's weight in pounds.
- Higher-value shipments
- WDA's standard declared-value limit is $250,000. Contact our office before scheduling if your shipment exceeds it so any additional arrangements can be reviewed.
- Weight on an hourly move
- When needed, shipment weight is estimated using seven pounds per cubic foot of occupied space.
A minimum is not an appraisal. If replacing your belongings would cost more, discuss a higher declared value. Consider the whole shipment, especially artwork, quality furniture and accumulated household belongings.
A cost example
For a 5,000-pound shipment, the weight-based minimum is $30,000. If you declare $60,000 to reflect your belongings, replacement-cost protection costs $510: 600 units of $100 × $0.85.
If moving services in this illustration cost $2,000, the combined amount would be $2,000 with released value or $2,510 with replacement-cost protection.
Illustrative arithmetic, not a moving estimate. Your move's services, declared value and applicable charges determine the actual amount. Storage-in-transit can add valuation charges.

Bring the important details into the conversation
- Artwork, antiques and collections: Tell us about them during the walkthrough so we can discuss packing, documentation and declared value.
- Furniture assembled from a kit: Special liability rules can apply even with replacement-cost protection. Discuss disassembly and handling before the move.
- Boxes you pack yourself: Liability for their contents can be limited; negligent handling is a separate consideration. Ask us about packing fragile belongings.
- Matched sets: A claim for one damaged piece does not automatically replace the entire set.

Choose before the move. Keep the paperwork.
Review your inventory and replacement values with us, choose your protection, and complete the written valuation declaration before work begins. Keep your signed bill of lading and condition photos.
If something is damaged, tell the crew, record it on the delivery paperwork and contact WDA promptly. ODOT's bulletin requires a written claim within three months of delivery. Keep the item, packaging and supporting records, and speak with us before arranging repairs.
ODOT's claims guidance explains the process. A delivery notation alone is not the written claim.
